Mercedes Benz C 111
![]()
The C 111 was the star of the 1969 International Car Show
in Frankfurt. With
gullwing doors, tipping lights, a new 258hp 3 disk Wankel engine and a
dramatic new shape and colour, it just had to grab the limelight
However, 260km/h was not fast enough for the Mercedes
engineers and within six
months a new version C 111-II with a 350hp 4 disk Wankel engine achieved
300km/h.
While this car did not make it into production, it
continued to grab the limelight,
when a more streamlined version achieved a number of World Records in
1976.
Equipped with a 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel and 190hp four drivers in 2.5 hour
shifts
achieved an average speed of 252km/h over 60 hours.
The C 111-III was the next version with covered wheels,
which achieved a number
of new records. The C 111-IV was the last version with 500hp V8 which achieved
a
speed of 404km/h on 5th of May 1979.
